Myakka State Forest
The Myakka State Forest was purchased in 1995 by Preservation 2000 and Save our Rivers Funds for the Myakka Estuary Conservation and Recreation Land Project (CARL). The land allows for multiple uses such as timber, outdoor recreation, and hydrological restoration, to name a few.
The forest is primarily covered by mesic flatwoods with sprinkles of longleaf pines and slash pines. This natural scenery offers many chances to observe birds wading in the marshy depressions and other native wildlife.
Myakka also offers recreational opportunities like camping, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and small-game hunting. To hunt, a state hunting license will be required. Furry friends are welcome to join in on the adventure as long as they are leashed!
Campgrounds are scattered across the preserved forest and offer the ability of hike-in or paddle-in campsites. The Myakka River cuts through the forest's heart, enabling visitors to fish, boat, canoe, and go riverfront camping.
Once the tent is pitched, take your time discovering over 40 miles of trails. And for the avid explorers, Myakka offers Hiking Equestrian programs to all ages.
